Former Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Jermain Defoe could be set for a shock return to the Premier League, with reports from journalist Luke Wileman in Canada suggesting that the player is in England to discuss the possibility of a move to join former manager Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers.

Redknapp has acted as something of a mentor to Defoe during the former West Ham United youngster’s career, signing him both for Portsmouth and when he moved to White Hart Lane, bringing Defoe back to the club where he largely made his name as a clinical striker, who also played regularly for England. When he departed Tottenham to join MLS outfit Toronto FC in January it seemed as though his Premier League career had drawn to a close, but unrest at the Canadian club may well see him return to English football.

Toronto head coach Ryan Nelsen, along with all of his coaching staff, after a horrible 3-0 home defeat against the New England Revolution on Saturday, despite them being well placed in 5th, level on points with 3rd, in the MLS’ Eastern Conference – albeit 13 points adrift of leaders DC United.

This could lead to a return to England, with former teammate Nelsen having been crucial to luring Defoe to the MLS in the first place.
