Most Pricey Tottenham Hotspur Crew Ever: David Bentley & Roberto Soldado In £174.6m XI

David Bentley A 3-4-3 formation made up of Tottenham’s most expensive signings of all time in each position.

Goalkeeper: Hugo Lloris – £8m

A absolute bargain. Lloris, who is now captain of the French national team, had been linked with Arsenal for years, but Spurs pounced in August 2012 and somehow managed to sign him from Lyon for a very modest transfer fee.

Defender: Ben Davies – £10m

Has been dubbed ‘the next Gareth Bale’, largely due to his position and nationality. While that nickname is absolutely ridiculous, Davies is a very promising left-back, who could be destined for big things, although an eventual move to Real Madrid seems unlikely.

Defender: Jan Vertonghen – £12m

Another top European name who Spurs signed from under the noses of Arsenal. Vertonghen moved to White Hart Lane from Ajax in July 2012 and he has been a first-team regular ever since.

Defender: Vlad Chiriches – £8.5m

Chiriches is a player who divides opinion. He has been linked with a move to Roma, although he remains a Spurs player for now.

Midfield: Luka Modric £16.6m

One of the classiest players ever to pull on a Spurs shirt. Modric joined Tottenham from Dynamo Zagreb in 2008, making 161 appearances for the White Hart Lane outfit before being sold to Real Madrid for £33m in 2012.

Midfield: Paulinho – £17m

Moved to Spurs from Corinthians last summer and scored eight goals during his debut season at White Hart Lane.

Midfield: Erik Lamela – £30m

Tottenham’s most expensive signing ever. Lamela was foolishly written off as a flop after a disappointing first season in England. However, following a torturous time with injuries, the 22-year-old is now fighting fit and, in three appearances this term, he is showing just what a star he is.

Midfield: David Bentley – £15m

This guy truly was a flop. The now-retired Bentley was on Tottenham’s books for five years, during which time he scored two goals in 42 Premier League games.

Striker: Roberto Soldado – £26m

Spurs fans were very excited when Soldado signed last summer. He was a player with a strong reputation as a deadly finisher, but he has struggled to find the net regularly in Tottenham colours so far.

Striker: Darren Bent £16.5m

Bent was apparently signed by the Tottenham board, against the wishes of then-manager Martin Jol. Spurs sold him to Sunderland for a significant loss in August 2009, but incredibly Aston Villa paid £18m for the former Charlton man 18 months later.

Striker: Jermain Defoe – £15m

Spurs sold Defoe to Portsmouth for just £7.5m in January 2008, but they paid double that to get him back 12 months later. Harry Redknapp was the driving force behind both moves.
