Arsenal have sensationally matched the release clause of Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy, report the Mail, moving in on the player’s move to rivals Chelsea which had appeared to be signed, sealed and delivered earlier on this evening.
The report suggests, however, that Arsenal have now matched the Chelsea offer for Remy and are looking to play their trump card of being able to promise increased first team opportunities at the Emirates Stadium, with regular forward Olivier Giroud on the treatment table after suffering a broken foot – whilst Chelsea’s main man, Diego Costa, continues to bang in the goals.
Arsene Wenger has been linked with Remy before and, the report suggests, the 27 year-old forward has been particularly interested in a move to Arsenal in the past – even being spotted at one of their games at the tail end of last season.
Whether the Gunners’ move has come too late to usurp Chelsea, however, remains to be seen – although missing out on Remy would be disastrous for Jose Mourinho after he extolled the virtues of having three senior strikers to choose from before allowing Fernando Torres to head to AC Milan on a two-year loan deal, a move that has left him needing to rush through an attacking deal before the transfer window closes on Monday evening.
