Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers may have remained coy on possible new signings at Anfield before the transfer window slams shut on Monday evening, but the possible departure of Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva to Napoli could open up the possibility of a new midfield signing for the Reds.

These five central midfielders could all arrive at Anfield as potential replacements for Lucas:

Nigel de Jong (AC Milan)

Nigel De Jong AC Milan

AC Milan and Netherlands midfield enforcer Nigel de Jong has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer – but he would add muscle and experience to the Liverpool side.

Potentially available for a bargain fee, de Jong would be an intelligent capture for Brendan Rodgers.

Alex Song (Barcelona)

Liverpool are reportedly interested in former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song from Barcelona, with the Cameroon international seemingly holding out for a move to Anfield.

Song is an experienced Premier League campaigner who could be an excellent capture for the Reds on a loan deal.

Adrien Rabiot (Paris Saint Germain)

Adrien Rabiot PSG

Young Paris Saint Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot is reportedly close to a move to Serie A runners-up AS Roma, having been linked to Arsenal, but hijacking a move would be a superb move by Liverpool.

The Frenchman has the potential to become a mainstay in central midfield for whichever team he signs for.

Lucas Silva (Cruzeiro)

Promising midfielder Lucas Silva has been a key part of Cruzeiro’s rise to the top of the Brasileiro, leading the 21 year-old to be linked with a move to Liverpool’s great rivals Manchester United.

As with Rabiot, he offers the potential of being a long-term option for Rodgers in midfield and is seemingly available for a very reasonable fee.

Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton)

Morgan Schneiderlin Southampton

It is a huge surprise that Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin hasn’t moved on from St. Mary’s this summer, with the French international arguably one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League.

Schneiderlin would cost a huge fee but is just the kind of midfielder that Liverpool are missing and would potentially be a superb signing for Rodgers.
