Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that the club will sign Frank Lampard on a loan deal until January, according to a Tweet from Sky Sports journalist Mark McAdam, with Pellegrini speaking in the wake of City’s penalty defeat to Olympiakos after a 2-2 draw in their pre-season friendly.

Reports have emerged in recent days that Lampard is close to agreeing a short-term move to Eastlands, after he left Chelsea on a free transfer to sign for their sister club New York City FC, whose maiden MLS season will not be until 2015.

This led to the prospect of Lampard being loaned out for the remainder of 2014, in an attempt to keep him fit for the start of the MLS season, with City emerging as the shock favourites for his signing.

McAdam also suggests, however, that Lampard has requested not to be selected against Chelsea – an unprecedented situation for a Premier League player.

As the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, Lampard is a bona fide Chelsea legend, so it easy to see why he would not want to face his former club – although City fans will doubtless be concerned over what such a request may say about Lampard’s commitment to the cause.
