The Magpies have the healthiest net spend of any side in the English top tier, accruing a £45m profit over the past five years, and Pardew will hope to be able to spend some of those funds on Shelvey.

A lot could well depend on whether Pardew is even still in charge of the club past the end of the current campaign with a significant portion of Newcastle United’s fan-base seemingly keen to see the 52 year old Londoner axed.

His side sits pretty in the top half of the table after last season’s 16th place finish but a run of six straight defeats have seen a great deal of pressure on Pardew.

Shelvey is enjoying his first season at the Liberty Stadium, providing six assists and six goals in the Premier League, including a memorable 40 yard volley last weekend against Aston Villa.

Pardew will know Shelvey from their shared time at Charlton Athletic when the youngster was kicking up a storm in the south London side’s youth and reserve teams.
