The Frenchman is said to be looking into making additions to the centre of his midfield after a suspension to Mathieu Flamini looks set to leave Wenger short on options in that area ahead of a challenging February.

Fellow midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been in strong form for the Gunners this season, but is another one of the club’s stars to have been struck down with a long term thigh injury.

Wenger has said to be interested in Paris Saint Germain enforcer Blaise Matuidi, but instead may opt to make a deadline day move for Spartak Moscow ace Lassana Diarra instead.

And sources in Russia have suggested that the former Arsenal midfielder is now Wenger’s primary target.

The 28-year-old joined the Gunners back in 2007 but quickly left to join Portsmouth just five months later after seeing a lack of action at the Emirates.

He made another big money move in 2012 when he joined Anzhi Makhachkala but was put up for sale as the club underwent a massive cost cutting scheme and joined Spartak over the summer.
