NFL Betting Preview: New York Jets at San Diego Chargers

Sunday afternoon NFL betting action features an AFC battle between the New York Jets and San Diego Chargers. These teams have had markedly different seasons so far. San Diego is playing very well with a 3-1 SU/4-0 ATS record while New York is 1-3 SU/0-3-1 against the spread. The Chargers got off to a slow start against Jacksonville last week before surging past the Jaguars en route to a 33-14 rout. The Jets were once again bedeviled by their sputtering offense in a loss to the Detroit Lions. New York has scored more than 20 points only once this season.

The Jets’ biggest problem is their complete lack of a viable starting quarterback. The plan heading in to the season was to turn over the reins to Geno Smith but he’s been very disappointing. He’s had trouble holding on to the football committing 7 turnovers on the season and he’s failed to execute in crucial points in games. The Jets are actually considering benching Smith and starting the over the hill and overrated Michael Vick. Starting Vick is as low and desperate as a NFL team can get with their quarterback situation. Making matters worse–Vick is the only other quarterback on the depth chart. New York hasn’t played well away from home in recent years–they’re on a 5-12 ATS run on the road run away from home though they are 6-8-3 ATS.

The Chargers have looked great this year as Phillip Rivers continues to develop into an elite level quarterback. San Diego is 3-1 SU/4-0 ATS which suggests that they’re not only playing well but that they continue to be undervalued by the linesmakers and betting public. The handicap here looks very simple–San Diego can put points on the board and it’s doubtful that the Jets’ secondary can stop them. On the other side of the ball, it’s almost unfathomable that New York will be able to trade points with Rivers and the Chargers–and particularly with their current situation at quarterback. The Jets are going to get worse before the get better while the Chargers look like a team that is just going to get better. By the end of the season laying less than a touchdown with them at home against an overmatched team will look like a gift.
