Eight players that Wenger must ditch in order to optimise his squad.
Check in to England vs Italy
Every summer club’s take a look at their squads and decide who is imperative and who is, well, expendable. Whether it be because there is no room for them in the actual squad or whether they’re better off cashing in ro reinvest, the Gunners are like everybody else in terms of having players they need to move on. Here are the top eightâ¦

8. Ryo Miyaichi
At just 21 years old, some might argue that there is still time for the Japan international to stake a claim for a future at the Emirates. However, if he was as good as he could, and probably should, be then he wouldn’t have spent the bulk of his time with the club on loan elsewhere. Since signing on in 2011 he has featured just seven times under Arsene Wenger, having spent the bulk of his time with Feyenoord, Bolton and Wigan. The time could be right for him to move on before he becomes forgotten.

7. Carl Jenkinson
Jenkinson was a surprise signing for Arsenal from Charlton Athletic back in 2011, and after a shaky start he began to look like he could be a genuine prospect for the future. But despite that, he’s never really pushed on from that early promise and looked like a threat to Bacary Sagna’s spot. With Sagna leaving, Wenger will surely be in the market for a new right-back, proving that he doesn’t trust Jenkinson’s abilities to make the position his own.

6. Abou Diaby
The French midfielder was once a core member of Arsenal’s starting XI before his horrendous injuries began to rob him of his career. He made a tentative return towards the end of last season, but it wasn’t long enough to judge whether he is worth keeping around. Fans could be forgiven for forgetting that he is still at the club, and you must wonder as to what kind of player he is now after so long and what kind of impact he can have on a squad that has moved on without him.

5. Nacho Monreal
By rights Monreal should have snatched the left-back slot off of Kieran Gibbs like he was taking candy off a baby. Being a full-blown Spanish international and not being able to fit into the side must be setting alarm bells and if the chance comes up to cash in on him then surely Wenger must take it. At his age, he still has some resale value left and the Gunners could possibly get up to £8m for his services.

4. Thomas Vermaelen
From club captain to bench warmer, the chances are that Vermaelen is feeling a little disheartened at the moment and has already spoken about leaving the club at some point in the near future. He would be handy to keep around, sure, but if he is not going to play regularly then the best option would be to cash in on him and reinvest the money on a defender that will develop into a first team regular to take over from Per Mertesacker eventually.

3. Lukas Podolski
Podolski has had his fair share of injury problems this season, which in turn has given Wenger his fair share of headaches to contend with in the process. Furthermore, when he has been fit he has rarely played to the best of his considerable ability, meaning the Gunners could be wise to jettison his high wages and replace him with someone capable of performing more consistently.

2. Mathieu Flamini
At times bringing Flamini back seemed to be a masterstroke, but for the most of the time it seemed slightly baffling. The Frenchman can be known to be a spiky character every now and again – highlighted when he broke tradition by not following the captain’s choice in sleeve length. Undoubtedly on high wages, Wenger should put him up for sale, make a profit (however small it may be) and use the vacated wages for someone else that will genuinely improve the squad.

1. Mikel Arteta
Arteta has been a through professional during his time at the club and nobody can argue against that, however, he is just not the defensive midfielder that Arsene Wenger wants or needs him to be. At 32 he will no longer be at the peak of his powers and the time could be right for him to move on and see out his career somewhere that will play him where he is best utilised.
