With both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leaving Man United it’s perhaps no surprise that Louis van Gaal would be targeting defensive reinforcements, and so it has proven if you believe these sources.

Thomas Vermaelen Belgium

The Daily Star claims that Man United are on the ‘verge’ of securing an £11m deal to bring in defender Thomas Vermaelen with the Arsenal man having agreed personal terms with Man United.

The 28 year old is said to be ready to leave the Emirates Stadium having fallen behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as the north London club’s first choice central defensive pair.

The former Ajax man has just a year to run on his deal and as such it’s likely the Gunners would consider offers for the talented Belgian.

Miranda Atletico Madrid

Man United have also apparently agreed a deal to bring in Atletico Madrid’s no nonsense defender Joao Miranda, with the Old Trafford outfit triggering the Brazilian international’s £24m release clause.

The 29 year old will be offered a four year contract and may be seen as a long term replacement for Nemamja Vidic and Miranda will hope that such a move aids his push for a return to the national team set-up having missed out on Felipe Scolari’s 2014 World Cup finals squad.

Miranda has had a stand-out season at the Vicente Calderon, helping Diego Simeone’s side to secure the best defensive record in the Spanish top tier, which was a leading factor in Atletico Madrid’s surprise La Liga title triumph.

Stefan de Vrij Feyenoord

talkSPORT claim that Man United have agreed an £8m deal to sign Feyenoord defender Stefan de Vrij.

The 22 year old had looked set to join Lazio but the move fell through and the centre-back has subsequently impressed at the World Cup finals, putting in solid defensive displays as well as finding the back of the net against Spain.

Van Gaal knows de Vrij very well who is apparently available for a relatively small fee as he has just a year to run on his current contract.

De Vrij has completed five seasons in the De Kuip first team set-up and has over 150 appearances to his name and helped the Rotterdam side to a second place finish and one would have thought that having secured a Champions League berth that Feyenoord would be better placed to keep hold of their top talents.
