Breaking News: New Jersey Governor signs internet gambling bill

The NJ Senate adopted
all of the Governor’s requests, including charging casinos at a higher tax rate
(from 10 to 15%), adding more funds to deal with problem gambling, and requirements
for lawmakers and officials to disclose personal interests with companies that
seek gaming licenses.

Bill A2578 reads in
part as follows: “In order to participate in Internet wagering, a player must
be physically present in New Jersey whenever a wager is placed by that player.
Each licensee that conducts Internet wagering must be able to verify that a
player is physically present in New Jersey when placing a wager.”

NJ has made the
headlines of gaming sites for much of the last twelve months. Between their
quest for internet gaming, one casino adding TV betting, PokerStars’ proposed purchase
of an Atlantic City casino
, as well as their fight in federal court to
overturn a federal statute to add sports
betting
